I wasn’t actually planning on making this video for 2020, as not a huge amount has changed since the 2019 version, but as I’ve had thousands of polite requests to make an updated version, I thought I’d keep you guys happy and deliver. As with previous years, I’ll be looking at the very best tyres available for hypercars to shopping cars, and even 4×4 and SUV. As not a lot has changed at the top end since last year, so this year I’m going to spend a little more time looking at the midrange sector of the market, just in case covid-19 has meant you’re focusing your money on things other than your vehicle.
Another novelty of 2019 summer season from the South Korean brand that is replaced the Hankook K117 in the product line. It regularly takes part in independent tests where it makes a decent competition for more expensive brands on dry and wet asphalt. One of the features of the model is the composition of the “Aqua Pine” rubber compound that contains vegetable and pine oils and improves grip on wet roads. Furthermore Korean engineers paid great attention to tire strength. In its construction, an additional reinforcing layer of aramid yarns, a two-layer viscose frame and an increased strength steel belt wire. After an eight-year hiatus, Kumho has returned to our tests in impressive fashion. Fourth place is a notable improvement from the ninth spot recorded back then and the Kumho proves itself as the best of the mid-range brands, just ahead of Hankook. Its success was mainly down to an impressive wet-weather performance, with first place for wet cornering and third overall behind Continental and Bridgestone. It felt good from behind the wheel, too, with reassuring balance through long sweeping corners. Even when pushing wide in tight corners, the Kumho tyre felt progressive, and its third-spot in the wet braking tests mean it’s a safe choice. Aquaplaning results were more middling, but tight margins meant it still wasn’t too far off the leaders. Stopping in the dry took around three metres longer than the winner, while the tyres felt a little soft on the dry handling track, with a less positive feel than the winners. This supple construction helped in the noise tests where the Kumho came second, but rolling resistance was only average.
