Buy a business or sell a business? There are some platforms where you can sell your business or buy a a new business. Businesses are bought and sold every day, maybe you want to enter a new market or you want to exit a market. Maybe you think your business will expand to a new level with another person leading and you reached the ceiling of how high you can expand it. Let’s see some successful business deals and discuss a little about places where you can buy or sell a business.

Any business can be sold! Even websites, that are not really businesses, can be sold for a lot of money. Ars Technica was founded by Ken Fisher, in 1998 and quickly became one of the top and most authoritative blogs with the technology industry. The site provided a great amount of news and sometimes reviews on their chosen niche. The website was purchased by Conde Nast Publications for $25 Million in 2008, a decade since the year it was founded. Weblogs Inc was created by Brian Alvey and Jason Calcanis in 2003, with the help of an investment from Mark Cuban. In the early days the business was initially set up for professional readership, they also had a number of other websites running alongside Weblogs, in fact there were approximately a dozen websites in total. Weblogs was purchased in 2005 by AOL to the tidy sum of $25 Million.

Advices for buying a business: Let’s say your business is well-structured and it’s a legal entity. In this case, be open to small businesses loans to make it easier for a buyer in the United States, which is where most of your potential buyers might be. Nowadays, that’s the way most people buy small businesses. They take a loan from the bank, and once they know the business they’re buying is a USA entity, it makes it everything easier for them to get a loan. If the business is not American, they won’t get the loan. This will leave you with less cash and make the whole structure much less beneficial for you. If you know ahead of time you want to sell your business, maybe in 12 months or more, restructure your legal entity. Consider setting your company in the US, in the UK, or any other place but make sure you get advice from a broker because this structure will give you a better evaluation and, eventually, more bang for the buck. Remember that buyers want practicality and even though your buyer might not be in the US, my experience tells me most of them are. Read extra info on Selling a business almost free of charge.

As for FE International, I’ll start by saying that the cheapest website I found on their marketplace was listed for $27,300. So in that respect, FE International is probably not a good place for newbie website investors to start their website investing journey. Sure, the possibility of getting scammed is lower, but you will have to be ready to shell out $30k, $40k or more for your first deal. I am not sure that’s a great idea unless you have money laying around and want to have fun. Last time I checked with FE International (2017), in order to get the information on a listing, you need to sign an NDA with them. You fill out a form (example below), and they email you to review and sign a Non-Disclosure Agreement. If you are serious, this shouldn’t pose as a problem, and the listing itself is enough to tickle your mind. I am hesitant to notice that multiples are higher on FE International compared to Empire Flippers because many factors come into play and a more serious comparison between the two is necessary.

Bonanza, listed as “…the best eBay alternative we’ve seen” by Ecommerce-guide, underwent a name change in 2010 and went from ‘Bonanzle’ to ‘Bonanza’. Like Amazon, Bonanza has roots in Seattle. Their current revenue is difficult to find, however, we do know Bonanza has had two rounds of funding. Setting up a booth on Bonanza is free, as is posting your items for sale…but there is a percentage that goes to the site when items are purchased. Consumers will enjoy this site; the navigation is very simple to use. To the left of the image placeholder are four dynamic section links; above the placeholder is a navigation bar with three links and a search bar. The links are listed as “For Her”, “For Him”, and “For Everyone”. Hovering over these links produces a quick-link list with categories.
