Why is RT important? It is important because its principal objective is to improve a person’s functioning and assist them in staying as active, healthy, and independent as possible in the life pursuits they have chosen. What makes RT unique is the use of recreational modalities as part of an individual’s intervention strategies. This approach is individualized to each person by their interests and lifestyle. By incorporating a person’s interests, their family and friends, and their community, recreational therapists make the therapy process more meaningful and relevant for the people they serve. Who is RT for? Recreational therapists work with a wide range of individuals that need their services, including children, adults, and older adults with physical, behavioral, cognitive, developmental, and intellectual disabilities.

Professionals can use CEUs to improve their skills and to stay current with new technology, laws, and regulations that might apply to their field. Even if your particular line of work doesn’t require you to attend a continuing education course, doing so voluntarily is a good way to demonstrate your commitment – and to improve at your job.

What are their qualifications? The National Council for Therapeutic Recreational Certification, the profession’s certifying body, requires at least a bachelor’s degree from an accredited university, a formal internship working directly in the field and passing a national exam. In general, recreational therapists can only practice if they have been nationally certified through the council. In fact, four states – New Hampshire, North Carolina, Oklahoma and Utah – have state licensure, meaning recreational therapists are legally required to be nationally certified in order to practice. Network and Expand: Professionals who pursue continuing education credits set themselves up for great opportunities to network with others in their field and make lasting connections that could translate into potential business relationships down the road. Continuing education events and conferences related to their programs also provide great settings for employers and employees to network and collaborate with like minded individuals.
